Bill Belichick’s son Steve Belichick to resign from UNC as ‘culture and climate’ probe ends: Officials

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN/AP) — UNC-Chapel Hill football head coach Bill Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, who serves as the team’s defensive coordinator, will resign, according to a university news release.

Steve Belichick’s resignation news came just as the university announced that authorities “concluded a thorough and independent investigation into allegations related to culture and climate within the Carolina football program.”

 Steve Belichick’s resignation will take effect on October 27, 2026, after his current medical leave ends, the UNC news release said.

 The defensive coordinator went on medical leave on August 6 and is the second key position in the Tar Heel football organization to announce a resignation this month, after North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi on August 3.

When Steve Belichick’s medical leave was announced, his father said he looked forward to “getting him back as soon as possible.” No information was released about Steve Belichick’s reason for medical leave.

Bill Belichick said at the time that the rest of the defensive staff would fill in collectively during his son’s absence.

The UNC news release also confirmed that  football player Keeyun Chapman was suspended from the team indefinitely in connection with a Chapel Hill incident Tuesday night.

 Keeyun Chapman, 19, and 18-year-old C.J. Sadler were involved in a traffic stop in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northfield Drive Tuesday night. Chapman was charged with carrying concealed weapons, which is a class one misdemeanor, police said.

Lombardi had been on paid administrative leave as the subject of a school investigation.

Lombardi was given a three-year deal paying him $1.5 million in base salary through the 2027 season. That made him by far the country’s highest-paid college football GM for the 2025 season, according to a USA Today salary database, another incongruity with the Tar Heels’ results.
