New poll shows tight GOP race for South Carolina governor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WJZY) — New polling shows the GOP primary for South Carolina governor is a dead heat. A survey from the Trafalgar Group shows three of the leading candidates separated by less than 1 percent.

That poll gave Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette a slight lead over Attorney General Alan Wilson and millionaire businessman Rom Reddy. Of the 1,200 Republican voters surveyed from May 21 to May 24, 19.9% support Evette. 19.4% plan to vote for Wilson, while 19% want Reddy.

“It is so wide open right now that anybody, it’s like a horse race, anybody… can win by a nose here, stick that nose out at the right moment,” said Robert Cahaly with the Trafalgar Group.

York County Congressman Ralph Norman came in at 15.9%, while Charleston-area Congresswoman Nancy Mace had the support of 14.6% of respondents. Other candidates sit in the single digits, like State Senator Josh Kimbrell, who came in at 2.3%.

“There’s all kind of earned media things that can happen, and then of course last-minute attacks, this is when they tend to happen, and last-minute spending,” added Cahaly.

Early voting in South Carolina is already underway, with primary day set for June 9. With so many candidates vying for the nomination, a runoff is highly likely. If no one gets more than a majority of the vote, the top candidates will face off in a runoff on June 23.
