Raleigh community comes together for mental health at ‘988 and Skate’ event

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Hope, healing, and wheels took over Conlon Family Skate Park on Saturday to mark the end of Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Bar-Ber Shop NC, The Mobile Barber Truck, and Raleigh nonprofit Grooming Resources and Opportunities all came together to host 988 and Skate.

The unique and free event aimed to boost community awareness of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and encouraged open conversations around mental health.

“We want to help prevent suicides, so that’s where the number 988 means it’s a number to call or text if you’re having suicidal thoughts or just need someone to talk to,” said event organizer Reggie Winston.

Families were able to roller skate, ride scooters, bikes, and skateboards.  The event also offered wellness checks, free haircuts, and food trucks.
