WATCH: Trailer fire on Tennessee highway sends firework flying over I-75

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE/WKRN) – Traffic on I-75 in Tennessee’s Hamilton County was brought to a halt this weekend after a trailer carrying fireworks ignited, putting on an impromptu display over the highway.

First responders were sent to the scene of the incident on Saturday evening on reports of a fire involving a pickup truck and a box trailer on I-75 North. The fire had engulfed the trailer, which was carrying fireworks, officials said.

During the blaze, the fireworks were “going off in different directions, endangering drivers,” according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.

Video from the scene posted by the Chattanooga Fire Department showed a large plume of smoke coming from trailer, which was engulfed in flames while fireworks shot over several lanes of traffic on both sides of the highway.

Another video posted by Facebook user Cameron Booker captured an even more intense scene, presumably from earlier in the incident.

“Oh my god. … This is crazy,” said Booker, who was filming from an overpass near the incident.

A representative for the Tennessee Department of Transportation said both directions of I-75 near Ooltewah had been closed to traffic as a result of the incident. Southbound traffic opened a few hours later, while northbound traffic was being diverted off the road into Saturday night.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire or fireworks, according to fire agencies that responded to the incident.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of motorists who were affected by the closures and would like to thank all assisting agencies for their support,” the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department wrote on Facebook.
