Now it’s led to an insect invasion that Bill’s Truckstop employee Beth Millsaps has never seen before.

“Looking like dragonflies crossed with mosquitos,” Millsaps said.

Sticking to windows and flying around gas pumps are mayflies.

“Customers come running in, swatting at them. They’re aggravating. They cover the lights outside at night,” Millsaps said.

Viewers sent us videos of the bugs covering buildings and even their homes.

After Monday night’s storms, some of the insects were washed away at Bill’s Truckstop. Employees like Naveed Baig have been working to sweep them into piles and, unfortunately, they left behind a stench.

“Yeah, they smell bad. They stink like a poultry farm or a chicken farm. Yeah, they smell bad,” Baig said.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, Mayflies spend most of their lives in the water as nymphs and then emerge as adults.

The insects only live for about a day or so and are only active in the warmer months.

As they continue to cover parts of Davidson County, employees at Bill’s Truckstop shared some advice.

“Just run. Run in. Run out,” Millsaps said.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, there are more than 600 species of mayflies in the United States and around 3,000 species worldwide.
