Woman killed in Fayetteville stabbing identified, husband charged with murder, police say

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A woman who was stabbed to death late Sunday night in Fayetteville has been identified, and her husband has been charged with murder, according to police.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Lansdowne Road around 9:06 p.m. Sunday for a reported stabbing. Once on scene, they found a woman with a stab wound to her chest. As first responders were preparing her to be transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville police said she told officers that her husband was the person who stabbed her.

The woman later died at the hospital due to her injuries. On Tuesday, the Fayetteville Police Department identified her as 46-year-old Anya Owens-Ray.

Police also announced that her husband, 70-year-old Leon Ray, was arrested “without incident” on Sunday night near the scene of the stabbing. He was initially set to be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, but as he was being processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center, officers received word that Owens-Ray had died. Ray’s charge has since been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Ray made his first appearance in Cumberland County court on Monday morning, according to court records. He is currently being held with no bond and is next scheduled to appear before a judge on July 15.
