The hottest Independence Day on record is possible this weekend in central North Carolina. It won’t just be record heat above 100° Saturday, but it could feel like 110° thanks to higher humidity.

We’ve got a couple more comfortable mornings, though, with Wednesday and Thursday morning expected to start close to 70° thanks to lower humidity. The afternoons will continue to heat up as Wednesday will climb to 94 in the Triangle and Thursday to 98. Both days will be mostly sunny without any rain.

Temperatures and heat index values climb even higher for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with 100-103 each day and feels like values of 105-110.

The only good news with high pressure overhead for 4th of July is rain chances are minimal at best. Most places will stay dry but exceptionally hot, with temperatures likely still in the upper 80s for evening fireworks shows.

The high pressure ridge slowly starts to break down early next week, allowing scattered rain chances back into the forecast. Rain chances are up to 30% starting Sunday and 40% next Monday.

Intense heat will begin to back off next week with highs in the middle to upper 90s instead of passing 100 degrees.
