Board members received complaints from volunteers and vendors about non-payments for fundraising events. Those board members then reported it to the sheriff’s office.
Bank records showed that Kevin Turner made purchases using the charity’s bank card to place online sports bets valued at more than $400,000 in six months. Other purchases were allegedly made where vehicle maintenance was performed multiple times dating back to January 2024 on the vice president’s vehicle.
The nonprofit provided opportunities for parents of children participating in various activities to raise money to offset the costs associated with the extracurricular activity.
On June 30, Kevin Joe Turner, 51, of Lincolnton, was convicted of three felony counts of embezzlement of more than $100,000 each in Lincoln County Superior Court after pleading guilty. He was taken into custody and given an active sentence of 58 to 82 months to be served in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
