The discussion begins with the intense heat gripping much of the country. Ross and Wes explain what a heat dome is, why it has become such a dominant weather pattern this summer, and how North Carolina’s temperatures compare to some of the hottest readings across the United States. They also take a look at the hottest temperatures ever recorded in North Carolina and discuss where this summer ranks among the state’s most extreme heat events.

Next, the conversation shifts to the record books. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) has challenged and broken several daily temperature records this year. Ross and Wes break down how many records have fallen, which months have seen the most extreme heat, and explore new Climate Central data showing how climate change is increasing the likelihood of record-breaking temperatures across the country.

Finally, they turn their attention to the tropics. They discuss the latest Colorado State University hurricane outlook, which has lowered the expected number of Atlantic storms once again, and explain how one of the strongest El Niño events on record is helping suppress tropical development. Looking back at historic El Niño events in 1983, 1998, and 2015 provides important perspective on what the remainder of hurricane season could hold.
