Severe thunderstorm warning issued for 3 central NC counties, including Wake County

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of three counties, including areas of Wake County, on Saturday afternoon

The severe thunderstorm warning until 2 p.m. is for northwestern Wake County, northeastern Chatham County and southern Durham County, the weather service said.

The warning was triggered at 1:10 p.m. when a severe thunderstorm was located 7 miles northwest of Cary, moving northeast at 25 mph.

Forecasters said the hazards from the storms include 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail.

“Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees,” the warning said.

The area of the warning includes parts of Interstate 40, Interstate 440 and I-540.

Other areas in the warning include Raleigh, Durham, Cary, RDU International, Apex, Morrisville, Crosswinds Campground, William B Umstead State Park, Parkwood, and Jordan Lake.
