The heat and humidity return! This week temperatures will soar back into the mid-90s, even the upper-90s but, as is the cliche’ phrase, it won’t be the heat so much as the humidity! The high humidity with push heat index values up to near 105° nearly every day this week.

Rain chances will remain relatively limited for much of the week, with isolated afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms providing the only breaks from the heat, if you’re lucky enough to have that storm develop near you. A storm or two is possible nearly everyday across the area, but most will remain dry, storms will move out of the northwest to the southeast this week and any storm that develops could produce very heavy rain and gusty winds.
A complex of storms will, however, be moving through Virginia Tuesday afternoon which could produce a few storms in central North Carolina. A marginal risk for a gusty storm has been issued for Tuesday.
By next weekend, the pattern becomes a little less hot and potentially wetter as temperatures fall into the upper 80s and rain chances increase. We’re also watching three tropical waves in the Atlantic as we move toward the peak of hurricane season. No system is an immediate threat to North Carolina, but we will keep an eye on them as they move west.
Even if they don’t develop into a named storm, tropical waves can transport additional moisture into the Southeast and influence our rainfall pattern. For now, the main concern locally remains the heat, with tropical activity something to watch rather than worry about.
