PITTSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The Chatham County Board of Commissioners is formally opposing a proposed natural gas pipeline project, officials said Tuesday.

According to Chatham County officials, Enbridge is proposing a 12-inch natural gas transmission pipeline that would extend about 28 miles through the county from Siler City to Moncure.
Commissioners adopted a resolution against the pipeline on Tuesday, citing concerns about potential effects on farms, waterways, wetlands, forests, and homes. They also noted that securing pipeline easements may require property condemnations, according to county officials.
Through the resolution, according to county officials, the board authorized the county to pursue lawful and appropriate actions to oppose the proposed pipeline’s development, including participating in regulatory and permitting processes, coordinating with partner organizations, educating property owners about their rights, and reviewing environmental impacts.

Officials said the resolution comes after residents shared their concerns at a special meeting on Aug. 5 and “overwhelmingly” voiced opposition to the project.
“The Board of Commissioners has heard clearly from residents who care deeply about protecting Chatham County’s farms, natural resources, private property rights, and quality of life,” Board Chair Amanda Robertson said in a statement.
“By adopting this resolution, we are affirming our commitment to protecting the long-term interests of our community and ensuring that the voices of our residents are represented throughout this process,” she continued in her statement. “Chatham County’s agricultural heritage, environmental assets, and private property rights are fundamental to who we are, and we believe it is our responsibility to advocate for their protection.”
