RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Two state government employees in North Carolina are facing felony charges connected to the theft of more than $20,000 in taxpayer money, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday.

According to the SBI, an investigation into 40-year-old Elizabeth Gayle Heath and her husband, 43-year-old Brandon Lee Heath, began in May at the request of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs after irregularities were discovered.
Warrants filed by the SBI show Elizabeth Heath is accused of obtaining state-issued credit cards from the agriculture department by falsely claiming they would be used for bulk purchasing or every employee was providing their card information.
After getting card information from two individuals, according to the warrants, Heath allegedly used them for her personal use.
Brandon Heath is accused of conspiring with his wife to obtain the cards, according to the warrants.

Agents said the Heaths allegedly stole more than $20,000 in taxpayer money.
Elizabeth Heath is charged with obtaining property under false pretense and Brandon Heath is charged with felony conspiracy, according to the SBI.
According to court records, the Heaths were both arrested on Sept. 18 and released on an unsecured $5,000 bond the same day.
Records show the Heaths both appeared in Wake County court for the first time on Monday and are scheduled to return on Oct. 12.
