SURRY COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — A driver recounted the moments her vehicle fell down a 30-foot hole after historic rainfall in Surry County caused a culvert to wash out.

Emily Crissman says that around midnight on Sunday, she was driving to house-sit.
“Everything went black. I had first thought that maybe something had ran out in front of me or I had hit a tree, but then I realized there was water all around me,” Crissman said.
Suddenly, she fell into a 30-foot hole.
“It was so dark and foggy. I did not realize the road had washed away until I was 30-foot deep into the hole,” Crissman said.
After briefly losing consciousness, Crissman realized she had lost her phone.
But her watch was her saving grace.
“It asked if I wanted to contact emergency services, and I pushed yes … By this point, the water had reached the seat of my car. I climbed out of my window and got on top of my roof. … I was still on the phone with the dispatcher just pretty much begging someone to get there as quickly as possible,” Crissman said.
Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad Sergeant Pete Barr said they found Crissman in the 100 block of Foothill Farm Lane.

“And once the man got down there to rescue me, he got me off of my car and wrapped my arms around his neck and did not let me go until I was on dry land,” Crissman said.
A few days later, she’s now counting her blessings after the near-death experience.
“Pilot Mountain EMS and Rescue. I can’t thank them enough. They were incredible. The fire department and my lord and savior Jesus Christ for wrapping his arms around me,” Crissman said.
Crissman says her car was totaled, and she suffered a fractured rib and a concussion.
