Durham-Chapel Hill area 6th best for young adults, study finds

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The Durham-Chapel Hill area is the sixth best in the nation for young adults living on their own for the first time, a study has found.

The study from Rove Lab was based on wages, cost of living, job growth, and local amenities in the nation’s 100 biggest metros.

Durham-Chapel Hill ranked sixth overall in the study with the following statistics:

• $94,124 average annual wage
• 17.9% average annual growth from 2022 to 2025
• $1,598 median monthly gross rent
• 20.4% rent to income ratio
• -2.34% cost of living
• 3.8% employment growth from 2022 to 2025
• 19.3% young adult population (ages 22 to 34)
• 6.1% rental availability
• 43.8 arts and recreation establishment rate
• 196.9 restaurant and bar establishment rate

According to the study, Durham-Chapel Hill has the highest average annual wage among the top 10 best metros for young adults and eighth-highest overall among the top 100.

Durham-Chapel Hill holds a final score of 72, according to the study.

The study ranked the Raleigh-Cary area as the 27th best for young adults living on their own for the first time:

• $78,462 average annual wage
• 12.3% average annual growth from 2022 to 2025
• $1,674 median monthly gross rent
• 25.6% rent to income ratio
• -1.84% cost of living
• 8.5% employment growth from 2022 to 2025
• 18.4% young adult population
• 4.9% rental availability
• 39.1 arts and recreation establishment rate
• 190.8 restaurant and bar establishment rate

Raleigh-Cary holds a final score of 68.28, according to the study.

According to the study, he top area for young adults is Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers in Arkansas with a final score of 74.24.
