ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) — Asheville police reported that an armed intruder was fatally shot by officers during an overnight breaking-and-entering call.

Around 12:30 a.m., the Asheville Police Department responded to a residence on Nancy Street due to multiple reports of a break-in in progress. Additional calls advised they could hear yelling and reported that a man had entered the home.
Upon arrival, officers saw signs of forced entry at the door and heard noises of a disturbance inside. Once inside, officers reportedly encountered a man armed with a knife.
After the suspect refused multiple commands to drop the weapon, authorities said officers opened fire.

Medical aid was provided at the scene until paramedics arrived. However, officials said the individual succumbed to his injuries after he was transported to Mission Hospital.
Their identity has not been released at this time.
Per the Asheville Police Department’s protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) was contacted and will investigate the shooting.

No officers were injured during the incident.
