GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A Greensboro man faces a charge after being accused of doing vehicular stunts on a Greensboro street.

Greensboro police arrested 20-year-old James Tyler on Thursday for allegedly doing burnouts and doughnuts in a public vehicular area, officers said.
Doughnuts and burnouts are examples of a street takeover. Street takeovers became officially illegal in North Carolina as of Dec. 1, 2023.
Tyler is accused of doing those stunts in a car on the evening of July 20 along West Market Street.
Court Appearance
Tyler made his first appearance before a judge on Friday. He appeared in court virtually while wearing an orange jumpsuit.

The judge laid out the charge against Tyler.

“You are in court today for first appearance on one charge of street takeover. That is a class A1 misdemeanor. It carries a maximum punishment up to 150 days in jail,” the judge said.
The judge asked prosecutors for more information about the alleged incident. Prosecutors did not have the time of the incident or an idea of how busy the street was at the time.
Tyler was placed on a $500 secured bond. The judge said the bond decision was made based on his minimal prior record.
