RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — CBS 17 has confirmed that a private prison in Winton, North Carolina, which is in Hertford County, will become an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.

The GEO Group, which owns the Rivers Correctional Institution, said Wednesday afternoon it has entered into a 5-year contract, giving the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement exclusive access to the facility.
The GEO Group said a federal immigration processing center will be activated at the 1,320-bed facility.
“We expect that our company-owned Rivers Facility in Winton, North Carolina, will play an important role in helping meet the need for increased federal immigration processing center bedspace,” GEO Group founder, CEO, and chairman, George C. Zoley, said in a news release about the plan.
The news release said that ICE will have exclusive use of the facility during the five-year contract.

The company said that a support services contract with ICE is expected to generate “approximately $80 million in annual revenues in the first full year of operations” for GEO Group.
Support services by the GEO Group include security, maintenance, and food services, access to recreational amenities, medical care, and legal counsel.
Winton, near the junction of U.S. 13 and U.S. 158, is located about 11 miles east of Murfreesboro on the banks of the Chowan River.
