PITTSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Chatham County has a new sheriff who has served the office for more than two decades, officials said.

Steve Maynor was sworn in as Chatham County sheriff on July 30 after being appointed to the position by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on July 27, according to officials.
Maynor succeeds Mike Roberson, who retired a week earlier after being appointed to the commissioners board.
According to officials, Maynor has served the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years. He was serving as chief deputy at the time he was named to lead the office and also held the position of captain of special operations.

“It’s an incredible honor, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside each and every one of you as we continue to serve Chatham County,” Maynor said at the ceremony. “Tonight is certainly special for me and my family.
“But it is not about one person,” he continued at the ceremony. It’s not about me. It’s about the team of men and women serving this county and taking your oaths tonight, our relationships with our families, with each other, with our law enforcement partners, and the citizens who place their trust in us every day. Together we will continue building on the strong foundation that’s already been laid, moving this sheriff’s office forward together.

Thanking his family for their support, Maynor said at the ceremony, “The truth is, none of us serves alone.”
The new sheriff also said his office would continue to focus on professionalism, fairness, and building trust in the community, while encouraging the members of the department to “love what you do” and “wear this badge and this uniform with pride”.
“We will enforce the law fairly,” he said at the ceremony. “We’ll protect the constitutional rights of every person. We will use our training, our judgment, our compassion and our professionalism every single day.
“We don’t change a community overnight,” Mayor continued at the ceremony. “We change it with one conversation, one act of kindness, one encounter at a time. We don’t build trust in one day. We teach, we encourage, we learn and we grow. And we keep showing up, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
