FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A new traffic signal is coming to a road in Fayetteville, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said Friday.

According to NCDOT, the traffic signal will be installed on Morganton Road at Northview Drive.

The project will have a new left-turn signal for westbound drivers on Northview Drive turning onto Northview Drive. It will mostly flash yellow, requiring left-turning drivers to yield to oncoming traffic, but will sometimes turn solid green and give them the right of way, according to NCDOT.

NCDOT said the project will include metal poles with mast arms to support the new signals, marked crosswalks, and pedestrian signals. The metal mast polls have been received by the department and their design is being finalized.

Based on data collected in 2024, an average of 25,000 vehicles a day travel on this section of Morganton Road, with many drivers using Northview Drive to access it for the Van Story Hills subdivision and the Morganton Road Elementary School. The new traffic signal is intended to reduce congestion and increase safety during morning and afternoon commutes.

Dundee Road’s access to Morganton Road will be permanently removed before the signal is installed because its caddy-corner intersection is too close to Northview Drive for the new signal to function properly, according to NCDOT.

According to NCDOT, one end of Dundee Road will be converted into a cul-de-sac as part of this change. The cul-de-sac will be designed to allow drivers to turn around and use another nearby intersection to reach Morganton Road.

NCDOT said work is scheduled to begin next Monday, Oct. 12 when state and contract crews permanently close Dundee Road’s access to Morganton Road.

The construction of the cul-de-sac and replacement of the adjacent sidewalk is scheduled to take about two weeks, according to NCDOT.
