New warden named at North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A new warden has been named at the largest prison for women in the state, the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said.

Carol Torres will serve as warden of North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh, according to NCDAC.

According to state officials, Torres has been with NCDAC for 30 years. She began in 1996 as a correctional officer at Sandhills Youth Center in Raeford and became a drill instructor sergeant. Torres was promoted in 2003 to sergeant at Harnett Correctional Institution in Lillington and later served as lieutenant.

Officials said Torres held the positions of lieutenant and captain at Scotland Correctional Institution in Laurinburg and then regional security coordinator for the South Central Region.

Torres was serving as warden of Anson Correctional Institution, which houses women in medium and close custody in Wadesboro, before being named North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women’s warden, according to NCDAC.

According to NCDAC, more than 1,200 women are at North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.

Officials said the prison’s medical center is the main provider of medical and mental health services for female inmates in North Carolina’s prison system.
