RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — One floor of the federal courthouse in downtown Raleigh was evacuated late Wednesday morning after backup batteries began “off-gassing” and created a vapor inside the building, officials said.

According to the Raleigh Fire Department, the incident began just after 10 a.m. at 310 New Bern Avenue at the Terry Sanford Federal Building.
Backup batteries for a computer server created a vapor on the fifth floor of the building, which includes the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

As of 11:30 a.m. Raleigh fire hazmat crews recovered the batteries and were in the process of removing the batteries from the building.

Raleigh crews were also ventilating the fifth floor of the building.
No one was injured.
Battery “off-gassing” is the release of vapors and gases from a battery typically caused by internal component breakdown, overheating, or chemical reactions during charging, use, or failure.
