Raleigh Little Theatre kicks off 90th season with ‘Hairspray’

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — This weekend, the Raleigh Little Theatre is set to celebrate a major milestone as it launches its 90th season with the iconic musical “Hairspray”.

Beginning Aug. 28 and running until Sept. 20, this uplifting production promises to entertain audiences with its heartwarming story, catchy tunes, and powerful message of inclusivity.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, “Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a lovable plus-size teenager with dreams of dancing on the popular “Corny Collins Show”.

When her aspirations become a reality, Tracy finds herself transformed from a social outcast to a sudden star. With her newfound fame, she is determined to challenge the status quo, dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, and win the affections of the dashing Link Larkin, all while championing the cause of racial integration on television.

Performances are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. at the Cantey V. Sutton Theatre. The runtime is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
