Raleigh woman charged with killing bicyclist in Wilmington crash, police say

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WNCN) — A Raleigh woman is facing a felony charge following a crash that left a bicyclist dead late Friday night, police said.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to a crash in the 2100 block of Carolina Beach Road around 11:40 p.m. They discovered a bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle traveling north on the road.

The bicyclist, 69-year-old Christopher Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Wilmington police.

Police said the driver of the vehicle involved was identified as 38-year-old Tierra Latrice Blackston of Raleigh.

An investigation determined Blackston was driving under the influence and while her license was revoked, according to Wilmington police.

According to a warrant filed by Wilmington police, six children between the ages of three and 10 were in Blackston’s vehicle when the crash happened. Blackston, the children’s aunt, is accused of not safely seating them.

Police said Blackston is charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and misdemeanor child abuse.

Court records show Blackston was given a $400,000 secured bond. She is scheduled to make her first appearance in New Hanover County court on Monday afternoon.

“Our condolences go out to Mr. Johnston’s friends and family during this very difficult time,” Wilmington police said in a statement.
