Potential Tropical Cyclone One is 65 miles southwest of Corpus Christi, Texas with sustained winds of 30 miles per hour and is slowly moving northeast at 6 miles per hour.
The system is currently over land, but is expected to emerge over the Gulf where the warm waters may help it strengthen into a weak tropical storm as early as Wednesday. This is not expected to be a strong or long-lived storm as once it moves back over land it will weaken into a tropical depression.
The first name on the list this year is Arthur.
A Potential Tropical Cyclone is a low pressure (a cyclone is the technical term for a low pressure) that isn’t tropical yet, but will be within the next few days and will bring threats to land. This allows the National Hurricane Center to put a track out, getting advanced warning out to communities ahead of any actual tropical development.

This tropical system will bring very heavy rain across the Gulf Coast. Widespread 4-8″ is possible, but up to 12″ isn’t out of the question through Thursday, stretching from the Texas Gulf Coast, through Louisiana, central and south Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. This could result in dangerous flash flooding.
Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect from Sargent, Texas to Morgan City, Louisiana as tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area within the next 24 to 36 hours.
No direct impacts are expected from this first system in central North Carolina, but some of the remnant moisture is expected to move east and interact with our next cold front Friday and bring us a chance for rain. Otherwise, no tropical issues in North Carolina are expected with this system.
