Cinderella Riggsbee’s The Shoe Repair has been in Chapel Hill since the early 1980’s. But Tropical Storm Chantal washed away everything she’d work so hard for.
Riggsbee remembers the shock of walking into her flooded shop after Chantal came through.
“It was the biggest surprise I ever seen,” she said.
“I had made my mind up not to come back,” she said. I said, “I can’t afford it.”
Riggsbee’s mind changed when family, friends, neighbors, and strangers stepped in to help.

“They did a GoFundMe page and I saw how much people care for me and wanted me back,” said Riggsbee. “I went to work.”

With the help of that fundraiser, Riggsbee opened back up about three months after Chantal. She had to source three new specialty machines, but she is back to fixing shoes, purses, and belts.
“Thank you for helping me get back in,” Riggsbee said. “I know that they love me and they wanted me back. So, that’s why I’m back.”

The Shoe Repair moved one door down. Her new location used to house a Persian rug store that business did not survive the damage from the storm.
Regardless of location, Riggsbee said she’ll keep repairing anything customers bring her as long as she can.
