Death Valley, Calif., soared to an astounding 134 degrees on July 10 back in 1913.

North Carolina’s all-time record high is 24 degrees cooler, coming in at a still-toasty 110 degrees on Aug. 11, 1983, in Fayetteville.

For Raleigh, that number stands at 106 degrees, the hottest ever recorded in the Triangle. It happened just a couple of years ago, on July 5, 20-24.

But we’ve come within a few degrees of that number on a couple of occasions this year. Raleigh climbed to 103 degrees on July 4 and June 19, with multiple other days of 101 degrees.

Most of those numbers were new record highs. We’ve seen 18 of those so far this year, with this 4th of July being the hottest ever.

When you combine it all, we’re off to the second-warmest start to a year ever for high temperatures.

Although there is a slight decrease in temperature on the horizon for this weekend, the longer-range outlook calls for a return to extremely hot weather.

Only time will tell if we continue to break more record highs as summer pushes on.
