Man charged in deadly RDU shuttle bus crash out of hospital, set to appear in court Wednesday

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The man charged in a deadly Raleigh crash involving an airport shuttle bus on July 4 has been released from the hospital and is now in the Wake County Detention Center, court and jail records show.

The Raleigh Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash at Glenwood Avenue and Lumley Road, not far from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, around 3:02 p.m. on July 4. According to police, a Nissan Altima driven by 70-year-old Barry Wayne Hayes traveled down the southbound ramp from Glenwood Avenue, ran a red light and struck a FastPark shuttle bus that was heading west on Lumley Road. The collision caused the bus to “roll and flip,” police said.

Two people inside the shuttle bus, 48-year-old Scott D. Christofferson and his wife, 44-year-old Jennifer M. Christofferson, were killed in the crash. Their juvenile child was hurt in the crash and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the bus driver was not injured.

Hayes was also taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained in the crash.

After the Saturday crash, Hayes’ family reported him missing the following Monday around 1 a.m. after not being able to locate him or the vehicle. That triggered a statewide Silver Alert after his family told Erwin police that Hayes was suffering from a cognitive impairment. The alert was cancelled once officials could confirm the same Barry Hayes reported missing was being charged in the fatal bus crash.

Records show he was booked into the Wake County Detention Center on Tuesday, 10 days after the deadly collision, and after being released from the hospital. He is being held on a $300,000 bond.

According to an arrest warrant, Hayes has been charged with the following:

• Two counts of felony involuntary manslaughter
• Two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle
• One count of misdemeanor reckless driving to endanger
• One infraction for failing to stop at a steady red light
• One infraction for unsafe tires

Court records show Hayes is scheduled to appear before a Wake County judge on Wednesday afternoon.
