WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — Two additional arrests have been made in connection with a shooting outside the Wilson County Courthouse that resulted in four people, including a sheriff’s deputy, police officer and the suspect, being injured on Monday.

According to court records, 28-year-old Terrie Lorenzo Covington and 18-year-old Ja’lexis Arshae Applewhite, both of Wilson, each face a felony charge of accessory before the fact. Court documents state neither Covington nor Applewhite was present at the courthouse when the shooting occurred.

The arrest warrants allege both defendants “counseled, procured and commanded” 21-year-old Abdul Karim Mustafa to commit the attempted murder and that Mustafa later carried out the attack.

Authorities have not publicly released additional details explaining what investigators believe Covington and Applewhite’s alleged roles were or what evidence led to the charges.

According to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Mustafa is accused of shooting 19-year-old Latoya Andrea Lucas multiple times as she walked up the steps of the Wilson County Courthouse around 10:40 a.m. Monday. Surveillance video showed Mustafa sitting on a bench outside the courthouse before opening fire.

Investigators said Lucas, who remained in critical condition following the shooting, is the sister of murder suspect Jamel Hines and was on her way to Hines’ probable cause hearing when she was shot.

Authorities have said the courthouse shooting was believed to be retaliation for the June 23 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ladarrius “D’baby” Simmons.

Hines, who turned 18 last week, was arrested on June 29 and charged with murder in Simmons’ death. His probable cause hearing was scheduled for Monday morning but was canceled following the shooting.

After the shooting, authorities said Mustafa exchanged gunfire with Wilson County sheriff’s deputies and Wilson police officers several blocks from the courthouse before being taken into custody.

A Wilson County sheriff’s deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and suffered minor injuries, while a Wilson police officer was shot multiple times and underwent surgery. Authorities have said the officer is expected to recover.

Mustafa was also shot in the arm during the exchange. He was treated at a hospital before being taken to the Wilson County Detention Center.

He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, going armed to the terror of the public, discharging a firearm within city limits and three counts of injury to real property.

On Tuesday, a judge denied Mustafa bond after prosecutors argued he posed a threat to the community.

According to previous court records, Lucas was also scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on charges stemming from the June 23 homicide investigation. She is charged with accessory after the fact and obstructing justice after investigators accused her of providing false statements to police.

Court records show bond has not been authorized for either Covington or Applewhite. Both are scheduled to make their first appearance in Wilson County District Court at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
