Gas leak causes evacuation on Dustan Avenue in Durham, fire department says

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A gas leak in Durham early Thursday morning forced residents to evacuate from their homes, the fire department said.

According to the Durham Fire Department, firefighters responded around 2 a.m. to a report of a natural gas odor in the 100 block of Dunstan Avenue. When they arrived, they located a natural gas leak and determined it was migrating underground and following utility lines beneath the street.

After natural gas was detected in nearby buildings, according to the department, about 35 residents in the area were evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

The evacuated residents were directed to a temporary meeting location at C.C. Spaulding Elementary School on South Roxboro Street, according to the department.

Firefighters said the area was isolated. Enbridge Gas responded to the leak and is actively working to stop it and make the area safe as of Thursday morning.

The Durham Fire Department will remain at the scene until the leak is stopped and residents are able to safely return to the area, according to officials.
