RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Celebrate the sweet taste of summer at North Carolina Watermelon Day on Thursday, July 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh.

This festive event, hosted by the NC Watermelon Association and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, invites families to enjoy free watermelon samples and participate in fun giveaways.
Attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet both the National Watermelon Queen and the NC Watermelon Queen while learning about the local farmers who cultivate this summer favorite.
“Watermelon Day allows families to meet the people who grow their food, support local agriculture, and experience firsthand why North Carolina products are second to none,” North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said.

North Carolina remains one of the nation’s top watermelon-producing states, with farmers harvesting over 10,000 acres annually.
The state’s favorable climate and rich soil contribute to about 8% of the nation’s watermelon supply, particularly in eastern counties like Sampson, Wayne, and Hertford.

“July marks the peak of watermelon season, making the State Farmers Market the perfect place to find fresh, locally grown melons straight from the farm,” watermelon marketing specialist Khaila Daye said. “When you buy a North Carolina watermelon, you’re supporting farm families, rural communities, and the future of agriculture in our state.”
