LAKE ROYALE, N.C. (WNCN) — A 25-year-old swimmer who went missing after crossing beyond a designated buoy line on Lake Royale in Franklin County on Sunday evening was later found dead, officials said.

According to the Lake Royale Company Police Department, the man entered the water near the community pavilion around 6 p.m. Sunday and swam beyond the designated buoy line before going underwater and not resurfacing.
Emergency responders, rescue personnel and specialized response teams searched the lake for several hours before recovering the man’s body. His family has been notified.

In a statement, Lake Royale Interim Police Chief Robert Smith extended condolences to the victim’s family, friends and loved ones while thanking the emergency responders and rescue teams for their swift and professional efforts.
Smith said additional information will be released as it is confirmed through the investigation and asked the community to keep the victim’s family in their thoughts.
