PITTSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The installation of a new gas pipeline and increased industrial zoning in Chatham County is not going over well with people who live nearby.

Enbridge Gas is developing a 12-inch diameter, 28‑mile natural gas pipeline in Chatham and Lee counties, the company said.
At this week’s Chatham County council meeting, residents made their opinions known.
People who live in the Moncure area say the pipeline would run under multiple working farms.
They also worry that increased industrial zoning in the area could lead to large-scale development, including the construction of data centers.
Enbridge said that the company pursued a legal process related to survey access on a property, but that the matter was resolved.

Below is part of a statement about the project from Enbridge Gas:
The pipeline would help ensure reliable natural gas service for more than 18,000 existing customers while supporting continued growth in Chatham and Lee counties. The project is not intended to serve a single customer.
We are still in the design and survey phase to gather data and landowner input so that Enbridge Gas North Carolina can select a route that helps avoid or reduce impacts on environmentally and culturally sensitive areas. Once the route in finalized, the project is subject to agency and regulatory reviews and approval, where additional public input is gathered.
We respect that this project raises questions and concerns in the community and among leaders, and we share their interest in protecting natural resources and minimizing impacts. We are committed to engaging with landowners, the community and local leaders to answer questions and provide information as route refinement continues.
The company added that there is a website set up to help answer questions from residents about the planned gas pipeline.
